The Best PS3 Shooters

You are here: Gaming Jump » The Best PS3 Shooters

The PlayStation 3 was the much-anticipated upgrade to the massively successful PlayStation 2. Many of the features that have become standard now were introduced with the PlayStation 3. Some of these features might be taken for granted now but they were super exciting and innovative - an online store where players could buy digital copies of games, wireless functionality across all consoles, large disc space, upgraded visuals and sound, and an online network of players that could communicate and play together. This was, for sure, a new generation for gaming and that is why many PS3 games are still being remade or re-released today.

Shooters have always been a fun genre to pick up and let out some anger. It has never been more fun to gun down enemy hordes than on this console. With the updated processing power, sound, and graphics, players could experience a photo-realistic world of crazy gunplay, immersive sounds, and exciting environments. Some of the best shooters to ever reach store shelves were released on the PS3, like many of the landmark Call of Duty games, Battlefield, Bioshock, and Borderlands. This console was truly the console to have if you were a fan of this genre. With the inclusion of online play, players could now face-off like never before.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

This series of games has always been praised for its fast and exciting gunplay, along with its realism. The Call of Duty franchise, up until Modern Warfare in 2007, was a realistic World War II shooter that allowed players to immerse themselves in the last world conflict. Since then, the series has taken a departure from that to allow players to experience a more modern setting with the same exciting gunplay.

This entry is a direct sequel to the last, set a few years after the credits rolled. Players will fight the Ultranationalist Russians as they have received more prominence since their takeover. The multiplayer mode is much of the same except for some new added guns and killstreaks.

Bioshock Infinite

This entry into the Bioshock series has taken a departure from the deep-sea worlds of the last two games by immersing players in Columbia, a utopian world in the clouds. While everything in this city may seem perfect on the outside, it is actually ruled by a nationalist, racist, cult group that wishes to brainwash its citizens. The player will join a resistance group called the Vox Populi that wishes to overthrow this authoritarian regime and try to rescue the Prophet’s daughter, Elizabeth.

This title has many of the same features that made the last entries awesome such as Vigors (Infinite’s Plasmids), and fun gunplay. This game is not only beautiful, but a blast to play.

Killzone 2

Killzone 2 is not only great fun to play, but also one of the most beautiful games on the system. Set hundreds of years in the future, this follow-up to the fantastic Killzone brings players back to the hardcore, out of this world action that the series is known for. The bleak and filthy landscapes have never looked so beautiful.

This sequel places a lot of emphasis on hiding behind cover to pop out and shoot when it’s safe rather than just running and gunning like most shooters on the console. Killzone 2 is the perfect game for fans of post-apocalyptic shooters.

Borderlands 2

Return to the world of Pandora, where the inhabitants are brutal idiots and the robots are programmed to be a smart-ass. There are plenty of new perks for your character along with an even larger arsenal of fun weapons to take down some psychos or bandits with. A new feature in this entry is the Badass rank, which allows for even tougher enemies when clearing an encampment. Players will come across many of these new enemies on their journey for the vault, so gear up and get ready to mow down some bandits.

Borderlands 2 is the follow-up everybody wanted for the series, filled to the brim with content and DLC’s that will keep players engaged years after they picked it up.

Dead Space

Dead Space takes the horror of the original Resident Evil games, and then launches it into space. This game is a non-stop splatterfest with plenty of dismemberment and fun guns to keep gamers engaged.

Players will follow Isaac Clark as he explores an abandoned mining ship to discover how it met its fate. Isaac will encounter many grotesque creatures which the player needs to strategically dismember in order to stay alive in this little ship of horrors. Dead Space will have fans playing with the lights on with plenty of scares and horrifying rooms. This game could not be recommended enough.

Max Payne 3

The final entry into the critically acclaimed Max Payne series, Max Payne 3 brings the awesome action that made the previous titles great while adding some new flair to freshen up this long-running series.

Taking place eight years after the last entry, the titular Max is looking worse for wear, struggling with alcoholism and depression brought on by his past. He takes up a new job in Brazil and realizes this may be more than he bargained for. The awesome bullet time power makes a return, allowing Max to duke it out against enemies that otherwise would turn him into swiss cheese. This is an awesome cap to an already fantastic series.

Red Faction: Guerrilla

Set fifty years since the last entry into the series, Red Faction: Guerrilla is even more dangerous than before. The Earth Defense Force has taken over, in their brutal reign they have resorted to kidnapping people and forcing them to work in labor camps. Players will take control of Alec Mason, who arrived on Mars just to end up watching the brutal killing of his brother by the EDF.

This title has kept the charm that made the other title awesome such as the Soviet imagery and the awesome action, but has taken the shooting to a third-person perspective. The world is also open and extremely large, allowing players to strategically take down EDF defenses and outposts through this expansive red planet.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2

Within a violent civil war in Mexico, the Ghosts are faced with a world-changing task, disable nukes within 72 hours or watch North America be turned to dust. Players will be able to control the Ghosts as they fight along the Mexican and US border in order to stop all-out war between the two countries and end the violence in Mexico.

This title introduces the Cross-Com 2.0 which allows players to get even more information on the battle, develop strategies, and command tactical strikes on enemy forces. Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 takes the shooter genre and adds an unprecedented amount of strategy and requires some quick thinking that will have players engaged for hours upon hours.

Vanquish

Another great title from Platinum Games, Vanquish takes the over-the-top action that Platinum is known for and beautifully translates it into a third-person shooter. Some beat ‘em up elements are still visible, but this game is all about run and gun action.

Players control Sam Gideon, an enhanced soldier wearing an Augmented Reaction Suit, allowing him to control his environments Max Payne style and take out large groups of enemies quickly. Players must slide, blast, and boost their way through multiple levels of exciting and increasingly fun hordes of enemies in order to take down robotic enemies and end the war for the planet’s resources.
